At Sweet Belem, not only do they have twists on classic Portuguese desserts, but all of their goods are made with free-range eggs. And what makes these tarts and pastries so mouthwateringly sweet? The teams’ ages old secret recipe, of course! For extra crispiness, the outer shell of the puff pastry is book-folded a few times to create thin layers.
Key Differentiators:
- Offers modern twists
- Makes Portugese tarts
- Follows age-old secret recipe
Customer’s Review:
A friend recommended I try their Portuguese tart, so I stopped by for a Portuguese tart and a chocolate one while there. Both were utterly divine – the best I’ve had outside of Lisbon! I’ll definitely be back to try more of their delicious-looking baked goods. Just be prepared to wait a bit – it’s a popular spot so lines can get quite long.

Tuga Pastries, with a long-standing reputation for “if you know, you know,” has an unassuming storefront on busy Clovelly Road, which means you’re more likely to pass it than pull in for a cup of coffee and some pastries. This bakery shouldn’t be one that goes unnoticed. If you’re craving custard tarts, Tuga is the place to go.
Key Differentiators:
- Wide selection of tarts and pastries
- Long-standing reputation
- Unassuming storefront
Customer’s Review:
Love the selection of pastries you could find here. The Portuguese tart has got the right texture and flavor. The staff is helpful and friendly as well.

A few years ago, this cafe was the only place you could enjoy Tuga’s Portuguese tarts. Its sibling cafe from a couple doors down, Tuga Pastries, preceded it by a few years. It’s ironic that now that Tuga is as popular as it is, you can usually find Portuguese tarts for sale at Village Bakery more easily than at the bakery where they were baked.
Key Differentiators:
- Cafe sells tarts from Tuga Pastries
- Good customer service
- Can usually find tarts more easily than at Tuga Pastries
Customer’s Review:
Good coffee, smoked salmon bagel with dill and pickles (although the bread was a bit hard) and Portuguese tarts.

The majority of Blackstar’s baked goods are Instagrammable, but the company also has a respectable selection of high-quality meals on a daily basis. The flaky pies are an excellent example. Another great choice is the custard tart. It’s a tiny piece of crumbly pastry with warm custard in the Portuguese style.
Key Differentiators:
- Instagrammable pastries
- High-quality meals
- Flaky pies
Customer’s Review:
The tarts are so good here. I love the flaky pastry and the warm custard filling. The staff is also super friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

The owners’ homeland of New Zealand has influenced many of the dishes at this Bondi institution, such as the renowned Louise Cake. The Portuguese tart is not so much. It’s still really good, though. However, their Portuguese tart is also a crowd favorite and is made with the same age-old recipe and free-range eggs.
Key Differentiators:
- Uses organic ingredients
- Freshly baked goods
- Hand baked pastries
Customer’s Review:
Not a better croissant in the suburb. The tarts are amazing too, but are they quiches?? Even if they were, I’d buy them a second time.

Although Sonoma has many stores, the reason it’s so popular hasn’t changed: the baked goods are delicious and affordable. Customer’s Review:
Had a great experience here! The tarts are so good – flaky pastry and rich custard filling. The staff is also super friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!
